WASIL IN TIME

1992 – WASIL Foundation formerly (CWCD) begins its journey

1999 – Wasil develops and launches its own tailor made microcredit model.

2002 – Rs. 1.3 million of funding received from the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) for the microfinance operations.

2004 – Rs 1.2 million of funding received from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation’s Financial Sector Strengthening Programme – intended for the development and documentation of the organisation’s systems. It’s expected to create a more professional, efficient operation.

2006 – The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) gives a grant of Rs 90 million. Rs 40 million to be used for enterprise development and the other Rs 50 million for micro credit.

2008 – Wasil obtains funding from PPAF for their successful relaunch – becoming the first Microfinance Organisation to successfully develop Islamic Microfinance products.

2009 – Wasil successfully launches its Islamic Mode of Operations.

  • 9 new branches of Wasil opened in Punjab, bringing the total of Wasil foundation branches to 19 across Pakistan.
  • Awarded a Social Performance Award from the Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX Market).
  • Designs a Project for the Rehabilitation of Ultra Poor Garbage Collectors in Lahore.
  • Schools project in Bahawalnagr.

2010 – Wasil expanded its Operations to 10 districts in 23 branches of the Punjab and all branches have also been successfully converted into Islamic Mode of Operations.

  • Submission and Approval of Wasil grant application by State Bank of Pakistan under the Financial Inclusion Program, & its component the Institutional Strengthening Fund.
  • Wasil applies for Conversion to Company to the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) for incorporation as a company under section 42 of Companies Ordinance, 1984.
  • The Microenterprises Support Services & Advocacy Cell (MEESAC) at Wasil was re-initiated to provide assistance to Wasil clients to enable them to advertise market & sell their products directly to customers to ensure maximum profits.
  • Wasil entered in to a Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SAMN member Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN) under the South Asian Microfinance Network (SAMN).
  • Program for increasing Sustainable Microfinance (PRISM) agreement was successfully made to obtain Running Finance facilities for meeting day to day operational working capital needs on one year renewable terms.
  • Wasil makes it in the Top 5 of the global Islamic Microfinance Challenge 2010. This international contest is a joint initiative by CGAP, Deutsche Bank, Islamic Development Bank, and Grameen-Jameel.
  • Wasil & the Social Enterprise Development Centre (SEDC) at LUMS, entered into an agreement to become knowledge partners, so as to provide useful insights into transforming the organization to effectively deal with the existing and upcoming challenges.
  • An MOU was signed between Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) and Akhuwat along with Wasil for the Islamic Microfinance Program for Graduates of TEVTA.

2011 – Wasil successfully obtained company’s license under Section 42 Companies Ordinance 1984 on 22-Februry 2011.

  • Formation of Shariah Supervisory Board (SSB) is in process. TORs with Dr Imran Ashraf Usmani of Meezan Bank has been finalized. Further Mufti Iftikhar Baig of Albaraka Islamic Bank has consented to be on the SSB of the Wasil.
  • Sheikh Hussain Hamid Hassan, Chairman Shariah Board Dubai Islamic Bank has signed an MOU with Wasil to act as a Patron / Advisor to the BoD of Wasil.
  • SBP approved for ISF Phase ll to carry out the Risk Management System, Special Asset Management System and further SBP also called for the proposal for MIS.
  • Wasil’s unique product of Sala’m is getting fame and popularity across the country. So much so the Pakistani main stream print media like “The News” Staff Reporter – Jawwad Rizvi wrote article on Wasil’s unique model of Sala’m product in the 07 May 2011 (Saturday) Newspaper.

Mr. Yasir Tariq, Chief Operating Officer of Wasil has been selected in the parliamentarian committee to launch its unique product of Sala’m in the country.
